Everything Shower

Why this self-care shower routine hits different

Some showers are just “get in, get clean, get out.” And then there’s the self care shower routine—the one that resets the whole mood, makes skin feel brand new, and turns a regular night into an at-home spa moment 🚿🕯️. This is the routine I reach for on reset days, Sunday evenings, post-gym “I need a full reboot” moments, or anytime I want that soft, clean, glowy feeling from head to toe.

I’m sharing it in the easiest order to follow: pre-shower (set the vibe + prep), in-shower (cleanse + exfoliate + shave + hair care), and post-shower (moisturize + seal + scent + skincare). It’s not about doing the most every day—it’s about having a checklist that makes sense, so when you do want the full ritual, you’re not guessing.

Pre-shower: set the mood + prep like a spa day

1) Set the mood

This part sounds extra until you try it. I dim the lights, put on a calming playlist, and make the bathroom feel like a mini retreat. If I’m doing a longer everything shower, I’ll also set out my towel and robe ahead of time so I’m not scrambling later. The goal is simple: make it feel intentional, not rushed.

2) Hair TLC (oil or mask before stepping in)

If hair feels dry, dull, or just “tired,” I treat it before the water even turns on. I apply a nourishing hair oil or a hair mask to dry hair and let it sit for about 10–15 minutes. This preps strands for a deeper cleanse and helps hair feel softer after shampooing. I focus on mid-lengths and ends first, then lightly smooth what’s left near the scalp (especially if I’m prone to buildup).

3) Dry brushing for skin revival

Dry brushing is my “wake up the skin” step. I start at the feet and brush upward in gentle strokes, then move up the legs, arms, and torso. It helps lift dead skin before I even get in the shower, and it makes exfoliating in the shower feel more effective (plus it just feels like a ritual). Keep pressure light—this is not a sanding project.

4) Quick face prep (optional but so nice)

If I’m feeling puffy or dull, I’ll do a simple face prep before showering: either a hydrating layer (like a basic serum) or a gentle mask that can sit while I do the rest. Steam from the shower can make cleansing feel more thorough, so this step is like giving skin a head start.

5) Tiny “future me” favors

These are the little things that make the whole routine smoother: I’ll floss before I get in, tie hair up if needed, and keep a wide-tooth comb nearby for after conditioning. It’s not glamorous, but it keeps the routine feeling easy instead of chaotic.

In the shower: cleanse, exfoliate, shave, and treat

6) Rinse out the pre-treatment + shampoo (yes, twice if needed)

First, I fully soak hair and rinse out the pre-shower oil or mask. Then I shampoo. If I used a lot of styling products, worked out, or went a few days between washes, I’ll shampoo twice: the first pass lifts oil and buildup, the second pass is where the scalp actually feels clean and refreshed. I take my time massaging the scalp because it’s relaxing and it helps everything rinse out better.

7) Conditioner or deep condition (let it sit)

After shampoo, I apply conditioner (or a deeper conditioning step if hair needs it). I focus on ends and mid-lengths, then clip hair up and let it sit while I do body steps. This is one of my favorite “efficiency” moments: conditioner works better when it has time, and I’m not standing there waiting.

8) Double cleanse the body (the clean base method)

This is the step that changed everything for my skin texture. I start with a basic body cleanse (think: a simple soap-style cleanse) to remove sweat, deodorant residue, and the day’s grime. Then I follow with a hydrating body wash-style cleanse. The second cleanse is where the shower starts feeling luxurious—better lather, softer finish, and the scent actually sticks around on skin.

If you’ve ever felt like body wash “does nothing,” it might be because it’s trying to clean and moisturize at the same time. Splitting it into two steps makes both steps work better.

9) Exfoliate (not daily—1–2x a week is plenty)

This is the only step I do not do every day. I exfoliate with a gentle body scrub about 1–2 times a week, focusing on elbows, knees, ankles, and anywhere that gets rough or bumpy. Warm steam makes exfoliating feel extra effective because skin is softened, so you don’t have to scrub aggressively. I keep it slow and gentle—smooth skin comes from consistency, not pressure.

10) Shave after exfoliating (for the smoothest glide)

Shaving works best after exfoliating because the surface is smoother and the hair feels softer. I use a rich shaving product (cream or oil texture) so the razor glides instead of dragging. I go slowly, especially around knees and ankles, and I rinse the blade often. This is also the moment I remind myself: the goal is comfort and smoothness, not speed.

11) Final rinse (warm to slightly cooler)

I finish with a thorough rinse to make sure there’s no conditioner or body product left behind. Sometimes I gradually turn the water slightly cooler at the end—not freezing, just cooler—because it feels refreshing and helps me step out feeling awake and clean instead of overheated.

12) Last body cleanse (if you love that “fresh” finish)

If I’m doing a true everything shower, I like ending with a final quick pass of hydrating body wash. It’s the “polished” feeling—like everything is clean, soft, and ready for lotion. If you’re short on time, you can skip this and keep the double cleanse earlier as your main cleanse.

Post-shower: moisturize, seal, skincare, and scent layering

13) Pat dry + robe moment

I don’t aggressively rub my skin dry. I pat dry with a soft towel and keep skin slightly damp on purpose. Damp skin is the secret to making lotion feel more hydrating and less like it’s just sitting on top.

14) Face first: serum + moisturizer while skin is still happy

Right after stepping out, I go straight into a simple face routine: hydrating serum (or just a lightweight hydrator) and then moisturizer. Post-shower is when my skin feels most receptive, and doing this immediately helps lock in that fresh, plump look.

15) Body lotion (the “don’t skip” step)

This is where the soft skin happens. I apply a rich body lotion all over, and I take extra time on elbows, knees, and heels. If you struggle with dry patches, this step matters more than any fancy add-on. The key is applying it while skin is still slightly damp so it spreads easily and absorbs better.

16) Seal the moisture with body oil (optional but elite)

If I want that long-lasting glow, I layer a body oil over lotion. This helps “seal” the hydration in and keeps skin feeling soft for hours. I warm a small amount between my palms and press it into skin instead of rubbing fast. It’s such a calm, grounding step—like telling your body, “we’re safe, we’re cared for.”

17) Hair love: leave-in + hair serum on the ends

For hair, I gently squeeze out extra water (no rough towel twisting), then apply a leave-in conditioner or a lightweight hair serum to the ends. If hair tangles easily, I detangle with a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and working upward. This keeps breakage down and makes hair feel smoother once it dries.

18) Soft scent layering: pulse points + mist

If I want fragrance to last, I treat it like a layering moment. I apply a tiny amount of an occlusive balm to pulse points (wrists, behind ears, neck) and then spray a body mist or fragrance over it. Damp, moisturized skin holds scent better than dry skin, so doing this right after the shower makes a noticeable difference.

19) Deodorant + comfy clothes

Deodorant is my final “fresh” step, then I put on clean, comfy clothes. Something about stepping into fresh fabric after a full routine makes the whole thing feel complete.

20) The real “post-shower bliss” step: slow down for 5 minutes

This is the part that makes it self-care instead of just hygiene. I’ll make herbal tea, sit for a few minutes, and let the calm settle in. No rushing into chores, no doom scrolling immediately—just a small pause to enjoy the reset.

My quick checklist (save-worthy order)

Pre-shower: set the mood → hair oil/mask (10–15 min) → dry brush → optional face prep → floss

In-shower: rinse hair treatment → shampoo (1–2x) → condition (let sit) → body cleanse #1 → exfoliate (1–2x/week) → shave → rinse → hydrating body wash finish

Post-shower: pat dry → face serum + moisturizer → body lotion → body oil seal → hair leave-in/serum → pulse points + mist → deodorant → robe/tea moment

Little tips that make the routine work better

Keep exfoliation gentle. If skin feels irritated, scale back frequency and pressure. Smooth skin comes from consistency, not over-scrubbing.

Let conditioner sit. Even 3–5 minutes while you do body steps makes a difference in softness.

Moisturize on damp skin. This is the easiest “glow hack” that doesn’t require extra products.

Choose one “extra” per shower. On busy days, I’ll pick one upgrade (like dry brushing or oil sealing) instead of trying to do everything.

When I use this routine (so it doesn’t feel overwhelming)

I treat this as a flexible everything shower routine, not a daily requirement. On a normal day, I’ll do the basics: cleanse, condition, moisturize. On reset days, I’ll do the full checklist. Having a routine like this makes it easy to switch between “quick shower” and “spa shower” without thinking too hard—because the order stays the same.

If you try it, tell me which step makes you feel the most refreshed. Mine is always the lotion + oil combo on damp skin… instant soft-life energy 🫧
